Stonefold Nine kept its records in different colours.

Green for resource yield.

Blue for ecology.

Amber for engineering.

Red for conditions that crossed an intervention threshold.

Nothing on Elias’s screen was red.

Stonefold's terminal occupied the back of an aggregate yard outside Brunnthal, behind concrete bays filled with ordinary gravel. Trucks passed the reinforced Gate building without slowing. From the A8, nothing marked the place as more significant than another materials depot south of Munich.

Inside, every movement was divided by jurisdiction. Alpenkern operated the concession. Landkreis inspectors held the local safety file. The BTA maintained classification and keystone-clear standards. Processing owned resource assays. Ecology owned animal counts. Engineering owned heat, fibre, and structural drift. Each system had a reason to exist. None had been designed for Elias's unease.

The verification shift began because Yield Management wanted to know whether eleven percent less ironmoss meant a bad collection schedule. Klara's crew entered with a normal T1 route plan, ordinary defensive equipment, and no clear-team escort. Elias carried Armed Resource Support authority but kept the utility spear sealed on the frame. Georg carried sampling tools. Their task was to measure, not diagnose a crisis that had not been declared.

At the threshold, Elias opened Mana Sense for the required baseline. Stonefold pressed against it like warmth beneath a closed door. A slow pulse travelled through the floor every fourteen seconds: the registered Level-Eight keystone regulating a farmed ecology far below.

Nothing about the pulse felt urgent.

The ironmoss decline appeared green.

“Down eleven percent across six weeks,” he said.

Georg scraped resin from a basalt shelf and held it beneath the assay lamp. “Harvest pressure?”

“Quota stayed flat.”

“Topology?”

“Western shelf shifted last month. Could have changed heat flow.”

Georg sealed the sample. “Yield Management will request a lower rotation if assay confirms.”

They tested three shelf sections. Georg cut a square from each mat, weighed moisture loss, and pressed the exposed basalt with a thermal strip. Healthy ironmoss released a dark resin that smelled faintly of hot coins. The western samples were thin and dry at the roots even where collectors had left the prescribed recovery border.

Elias compared harvest logs. No crew had exceeded quota. Cut spacing remained inside procedure. Disease markers were absent. The decline spread outward from a deep shelf rather than following the routes where people worked.

“Nutrient draw?” Elias asked.

“Possible,” Georg said. “Heat change can do it. Root competition can do it. A larger organism feeding below can do it.”

“Which queue?”

“Yield first. Ecology if assay shows biological stress.”

The assay showed reduced mineral uptake without identifying why. Elias attached the thermal note and watched the report choose green because the measurable loss was resource yield.

They were three hours into a verification shift at Stonefold, a T1 basalt ecology accessed through a materials yard near Brunnthal in Landkreis München. The place resembled a quarry built inside a furnace that had forgotten to ignite. Black terraces descended beneath a red haze. Ironmoss grew in dark green mats along warm seams. Ember-iron lines glowed too faintly to see without filtered lamps.

On Elias's earlier verification runs, Stonefold had been noisy in ordinary ways. Stonebacks knocked from distant shelves. Collection crews cursed resin that cured on gloves. Ventilation fans at the anchor corridor sent a low industrial vibration through the northern floor. Heat varied by route but returned to baseline after every registered tide.

The site was heavily farmed, not tame. Its adult Stonebacks were territorial grazers managed around collection windows. The Level-Eight keystone regulated juvenile dispersal and kept deeper burrowers away from the ironmoss shelves. Clear teams removed or reset it on a published cycle before anchor pressure rose.

Routine made deviations legible. Elias knew what should have occupied the silences between equipment sounds.

Stonebacks announced themselves by striking forelegs against rock.

The sound had made Elias uneasy on his first Stonefold shift months earlier. Adult animals knocked to claim feeding space and locate one another through basalt. Juveniles produced lighter, irregular answers from cracks too small for workers. The result was not constant noise but a site that periodically acknowledged itself.

At Marker Three, Farid struck the floor once with the heel of his shield. The echo travelled down two terraces.

Nothing answered.

“Not a recognised signal,” Tobi said.

“It normally irritates one anyway,” Farid replied.

They waited through two pulse intervals. Nika heard moving grit beneath the eastern shelf and marked it as uncertain. The route remained open.

The usual rhythm had been absent all morning.

Elias checked the ecology counter at the next marker.

“No juvenile detections in Grid Six.”

Georg looked toward the lower terraces. “Migration?”

“Adults remain inside estimate.”

“File animal count.”

Elias entered it in blue.

The ecology form asked for verified absence, sensor absence, or observational uncertainty. Elias selected sensor and direct-route absence, then attached the grid interval. The count remained within accepted fluctuation.

The seasonal interval was broad because juveniles moved between warm cracks. A week with no detections had occurred twice in the last three years. Neither preceded an incident. Ecology software compared the present count to those weeks and kept the deviation blue.

Elias added the missing knock response as a free-text observation. The animal form had fields for number, verified species, behaviour, injury, and migration direction. Silence fit only beneath OTHER.

At the eastern shelf, heat shimmer distorted the frame wheels.

Nika checked ambient temperature. “One point three above seasonal baseline.”

She repeated the measurement with a contact strip against basalt, then moved ten metres away from the frame battery. The increase persisted. Tobi swapped her sensor with his own. Same result within a tenth.

The extra heat did not arrive from the air alone. The eastern floor warmed from beneath in narrow lines, as if the thermal gradient had climbed closer to the surface.

“Mana pressure?” Klara asked.

“Flat.”

Tobi compared the sensor against his suit reading. “Both agree.”

Elias filed an engineering note in amber. The variation remained below maintenance threshold.

Engineering's threshold protected people from structural heat, equipment failure, and accelerated topology drift. One point three degrees did not threaten a suit or fibre node. The form accepted the note and scheduled comparison during the next ordinary maintenance block.

Three observations. Three reasonable destinations.

Klara paused at the next opaque marker and requested the route status from each role. Farid: no contact. Nika: heat elevated but safe. Tobi: fibre and overlay stable. Georg: yield anomaly ongoing. Elias: juvenile absence plus heat correlation, neither above trigger.

“Does correlation alter movement?” Klara asked.

“Not under current order,” Elias said. “It raises the value of the next ecology and telemetry checks.”

They continued because procedure contained a way to notice concern without converting it prematurely into retreat.

Analysis held them together without naming a cause.

At Grid Eight, Georg showed Elias the ember-iron seam.

It was not valuable enough to mine on this concession. The metal threaded too thinly through basalt and carried heat that destroyed ordinary cutters. Resource crews used it as a reference because its deep gradient changed more slowly than the corridors built above it.

Under the filtered lamp, a dull line ran through the basalt at knee height, straight enough to look manufactured.

“Deep seam continues through ordinary shifts,” Georg said. “Surface corridors move. Ember iron reforms along the same thermal gradient.”

“Navigation reference?”

“Last resort. It bends. It branches. And following it usually leads near heat you should not visit.”

Georg made Elias trace the main line past two false branches. The true seam held a regular mineral grain and warmed the probe from the left. One branch cooled after a metre. The other ended where a surface fracture had filled with metallic dust.

“If the overlay fails, what do you report?” Georg asked.

“Direction of increasing gradient, branch count, last verified marker, and whether the seam remains continuous.”

“And you do not say it leads home.”

“It leads toward the anchor service corridor under ordinary topology.”

“Better.”

They marked the seam on Elias's offline route sheet. Tobi considered it redundant because the fibre network showed green at every node. Georg considered redundancy a tool whose value began after optimism ended.

Elias mapped the line to the Gate-anchor service corridor because resource verification required it, not because anyone expected to become lost.

Farther down, the extraction frame rolled across parallel grooves in the dust.

Elias stopped.

Each scrape was wider than his hand. Four grooves ended at a hollow beneath the terrace lip.

“Nest marks,” Georg said.

“Scale?”

Georg placed a reference card beside them. “Larger than our recorded adults.”

“Could be repeated use.”

“Could be erosion.”

Farid placed his shield inside the hollow without crossing the terrace lip. The shield light revealed crushed ironmoss, several translucent shell flakes, and a dark smear too old for field identification. Nika sampled the smear through a long swab. Protein positive, species unresolved.

The grooves did not match ordinary adult Stonebacks. Those animals were broad enough to leave paired belly marks between foreleg scrapes. This sign showed four deep channels with nothing between, as if a much larger body had lifted itself clear or repeated the same movement across different visits.

“Matriarch scale?” Elias asked.

Georg did not answer quickly. “No registered matriarch here.”

“That isn't scale.”

“Scale exceeds our adult reference by forty to sixty percent. Cause unverified.”

The wording entered the photograph metadata.

They photographed, measured, and inspected the edges. The marks were recent enough to retain loose dust, old enough that no clear print remained.

Elias attached them to the shift note. The form’s ecology priority field required a verified organism or threshold event for escalation. He selected UNCONFIRMED PHYSICAL SIGN.

The note entered the queue behind fourteen others.

Two concerned lichen contamination. Four concerned normal scrape damage near harvest rails. One reported a cracked boot seal from a worker who had already received treatment. The queue order reflected verified urgency. Elias could not make his sign important by feeling the outline around it.

At the final station, Tobi polled boss-core telemetry.

The sensor did not locate the keystone. It measured the slow mana rhythm through three buried contacts and compared phase difference against the registered baseline. A clean pulse meant the resident boss continued regulating temperature and juvenile dispersal inside expected range.

The graph wavered around the expected line.

“Noise increased,” he said.

“Instrument?” Klara asked.

“Self-test passes. Reading remains in tolerance.”

Tobi disconnected and reseated the contact. He ran the self-test on battery, then from the node supply. The second peak remained. It arrived inconsistently—sometimes three seconds behind the keystone pulse, sometimes nearly beneath it.

“Could be reflection from the shifted western shelf,” he said. “Could be a damaged contact. Could be another active mass.”

“Level estimate?” Klara asked.

“Not from this noise.”

Nika opened a narrow ward and watched the interference change. The second peak strengthened when her mana touched the site, then disappeared on the next cycle. She closed the ward before the comparison became exposure.

Stonefold’s Level-8 keystone normally produced a slow regulatory pulse through the site. Today the pulse contained a second irregular peak, too small to trigger the ecology alarm.

Mana Sense gave Elias only a faint pressure beneath the stone. Analysis could compare the waveform but not identify a source.

“Attach raw data,” he said.

Tobi did.

The technical report automatically classified the waveform as sensor-quality variance. Its owner was Engineering because the registered keystone had not moved outside tolerance. Ecology received no alert.

At debrief, Elias opened all five observations on his tablet.

The terminal had already separated them. Yield Management requested assay confirmation and proposed reducing next week's quota. Ecology scheduled juvenile recount on the following route. Engineering accepted the heat note into a maintenance comparison. Tobi's waveform entered sensor diagnostics. The scrape image remained awaiting biological classification.

Each response was sensible within its scope. None asked whether a hungry organism large enough to make the grooves could also explain missing juveniles and a changed thermal gradient.

Ironmoss down.

Juveniles absent.

Heat up.

Large scrapes.

Telemetry noisy.

Viewed together, they looked like the outline of a problem.

Elias placed timestamps beside them. The moss decline began six weeks earlier. Juvenile detections fell four weeks earlier. Heat rose gradually across three inspections. The first large scrape appeared on an image from twelve days ago but had been labelled rail damage. Telemetry noise increased after that.

The sequence tempted him into a story: a larger animal had consumed the juveniles, drawn heat upward, damaged the moss, and interfered with the keystone pulse.

Analysis could organise the story. It could not prove any of its verbs.

He listed alternatives beneath each link. Collection bias. Seasonal migration. Topology drift. Sensor reflection. An unregistered adult. Several unrelated changes. The combined note grew less dramatic and more defensible.

The system did not allow a cross-department incident package without a qualifying event. Elias could file a general anomaly note.

He did.

Elias called Vogl's office rather than relying only on the queue. Her assistant documented the correlation request and said Vogl was reviewing an active contamination event. Klara added command endorsement. Georg added the works-council note that the next collection crew should receive the linked observations at briefing.

They used every escalation available below an incident threshold. The result was review, not immediate closure.

Yield Management received the moss decline. Ecology received animal count and telemetry. Engineering received heat. The scrape image remained attached to the shift log. The general note linked their reference numbers but held no priority authority.

Nothing was hidden.

Yield could see the moss but not raw boss telemetry. Engineering could see heat and noise but not unverified animal signs. Ecology saw the missing juveniles without the collection decline's start date. Klara's shift log linked everything, yet a general note entered review at ordinary priority because no department owned a cross-site theory below threshold.

Georg signed the resource section. Nika signed exposure and temperature. Tobi signed instrumentation. Klara acknowledged command review.

“Can we escalate verbally?” Elias asked.

“We can request correlation,” Klara said. “That is what your general note does.”

“And the next shift?”

“Runs under the current site status unless Operations changes it.”

She did not tell him the warnings were nothing. She also did not turn a support worker's pattern into closure authority.

Nothing crossed a threshold.

On the terminal summary wall, the site remained green.

A collection team scheduled for dawn appeared beneath it. Klara asked Operations to hold their equipment issue until Vogl acknowledged the correlation note. Petra approved a four-hour administrative hold without invoking statutory closure. Production lost time while the formal status remained unchanged.

That small action would later matter. No ordinary collection crew entered Stonefold between the warning ledger and the review meeting.

Elias looked at the five colours in five separate queues.

He exported the permitted fields into a blank incident worksheet. The software stripped raw telemetry because his analytics role lacked Engineering ownership, so Tobi attached it separately. Ecology's juvenile interval exported as a range without the free-text silence note. The scrape photograph lost Georg's scale comment until Elias restored it by hand.

The resulting page was not an official incident package. It was a table with reference numbers, dates, owners, observed changes, and unknowns. Klara signed only that it matched the shift record. Georg signed only the resource observations. Tobi signed the waveform attachment.

“Send it to Vogl,” Klara said.

“Already queued.”

“Then stop improving it. If she needs more, she asks.”

Elias saved the version and closed Analysis. Continuing to polish the pattern after transfer would not give him authority over the review.

At 21:18, Vogl acknowledged the correlation request and froze the dawn collection hold until she could compare the source records. Her message did not say danger. It said the dates justified review before routine entry.

Elias forwarded the acknowledgement to Klara and put the tablet down. The work had crossed from his observation into another person's authority. He did not know what the five warnings meant. He knew they would share a table in the morning.

The ledger had contained every warning. What it lacked was a place where they became one thing.

Elias had not found the Matriarch. He had made it harder for the next decision to pretend the separate changes had never shared a date.
